HIP HOP DANCE CLASSES
Welcome to Funk Lab Dance Center, where the rhythm of passion meets the beat of excellence. Established in 2011 by the visionary Kelly Dailey, our dance studio has been setting the stage on fire and making waves in the dance world. We're proud to have been recognized as a finalist in the "Best of Dayton" for the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, and honored as the winner in 2022 and 2023.
But our impact goes beyond local acclaim. We've showcased our talents internationally, earning our place as finalists at the World Dance Championships in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2022, with a victory in 2016. In 2023, we took to the stage at Hip Hop International in Los Angeles, making us finalists once again. Our talents have also shone bright as we clinched the title of "Best in Show" at the Precision Arts Challenge in 2022 and 2023 and the Diamond Studio Award for Star Dance Alliance.
At Funk Lab Dance Center, we believe that dance is for everyone, and that's why we offer hip hop dance classes for ages 2 to adult, catering to all skill levels. Whether you're dancing for fun or aspiring to go pro, we're here to nurture your talent and passion.
We take immense pride in being the home of the HYPE-othesis crew and having the privilege to perform on the Carnival Cruise Main Stage in the summer of 2023, taking our art to the high seas.
Our commitment to excellence extends to our roster of celebrity choreographers who have graced our studio, including Jaja (America’s Best Crew), Popin Pete, Mr. Wiggles, Sugapop, Vincent Paterson ("Thriller"), Marty Kudelka ("Trolls"), Comfort Fedoke (of SYTYCD fame), Philip Chbeeb, and many more. Their expertise enriches our dance community, and we're honored to share their knowledge with our students.

STREET STYLES: BREAK-DANCING & KRUMP
AGES 3-13
Get FUNky, confident and cool in a break-dancing class at Funk Lab! Join us in a hip-hop journey like no other.
In our high-energy Breakin’ classes, your child will not only learn the foundations of breakdancing (helloooo 6-step) but also dive into the captivating history of the Hip Hop and its elements. We've got it all covered - from funky top rocking to crazy footwork, gravity-defying freezes, smooth transitions, and jaw-dropping power moves. Our students will learn to combine all of these moves and practice in one of our classroom dance circles.
In our Krump classes, your child will learn the raw foundations and powerful expression of this high-energy street style. From chest pops and arm swings to stomps, jabs, and dramatic storytelling through movement, students will explore how Krump uses strength, intensity, and emotion to captivate any crowd. They’ll also get to practice freestyle battles and session circles, building confidence and finding their unique voice through the art of Krump.
FUNK STYLES: POPPING, LOCKING & WAVING
Take a Funk-styles dance class at Funk Lab in the birthplace of Funk, Dayton!
Did you know Dayton is the birthplace of Funk? Did you know funk styles originated in the 1970s? Did you know one of the founders, Popin Pete, has been a guest teacher at Funk Lab many times? Did you know Popping and Locking are two completely different styles of dance? Learn all of this and MORE at Funk Lab.
In these technical classes, your child will not only learn the “Fresno” and “Boogaloo” but also the “Alpha” and “Rocksteady” amongst other funk moves. Our students will become performance-ready while learning how to combine comical expressions and gestures with the funkiest movements.
AGES 6-18
CLUB STYLES: HOUSE & WAACKING
AGES 9-
ADULT
In these feel-good, high-energy Club Styles classes, your child will explore both the soulful grooves of House and the expressive flair of Waacking. They’ll learn House fundamentals like fast footwork, jacking grooves, and floorwork patterns, all designed to build stamina, rhythm, and musicality. On the Waacking side, students will unlock their inner star with dramatic arm movements, poses, and storytelling set to funky disco-inspired tracks. Together, these styles celebrate individuality, freedom, and connection to the music- helping students grow as both dancers and performers.
Our Club Styles classes are led by passionate instructors who bring authenticity, history, and inspiration into every session, making sure your child leaves class feeling energized, creative, and confident.
PILLARS: GRAFFITI & DJ
AGES 6-
ADULT
In our Pillars classes, students dive into two of Hip Hop’s original elements: Graffiti Art and DJing. In Graffiti, students learn how to create bold lettering, vibrant color blends, and powerful imagery, always on legal walls and community-approved mural projects. This gives them the thrill of real graffiti work while ensuring everything is done responsibly, safely, and legally. Students also get the chance to contribute to meaningful public art pieces, building pride in their creativity and teamwork.
In DJ class, students step behind the turntables to explore scratching, mixing, and blending tracks. They discover how DJs shape the heartbeat of Hip Hop, learning both the technical skills and the artistry needed to control the energy of a room.
Led by expert instructors, our Graffiti and DJ classes give young artists the tools to express themselves with confidence through color, sound, and culture.
HIP HOP
Our most popular dance style, Hip Hop (levels 1,2,3,4,5) help you build a solid foundation in Hip Hop. Whether you are a beginner looking to kickstart your dance journey or an experienced dancer seeking to refine your skills, this class style offers something for everyone.
You will learn the building blocks of Hip Hop with grooves and isolations while gaining the confidence to execute impressive moves. We’ll take those skills and infuse them into captivating Hip Hop dance routines, like seen in music videos. Get ready to groove to the latest beats and leave each class with a sense of accomplishment and a sweat-induced smile.
Our Hip Hop classes are led by the charismatic Cortney and Mya, both exceptionally talented and crowd favorites!

PRE HIP HOP
AGES 3-6
Tiny dancers, big moves! Calling all toddlers with FUNky parents! Join one of our Pre Hip Hop dance classes, where we combine age-appropriate moves with the catchiest hip hop tracks for the ultimate weekly dance party! With awesome hip hop tunes and funky choreography, your little ones will experience the thrill of dance while building coordination and rhythm.
Our friendly Pre Hip Hop Instructors, Cortney and Mya, will guide little ones through funky routines that encourage teamwork and friendship, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere.
